Yoga In Pregnancy

Pregnant women practising yoga

Pregnancy yoga teaches you postures, breathing techniques and relaxation to help you cope better with labour and the delivery of your baby and is suitable from 12 weeks. You can come to classes as a complete beginner or a seasoned yogi. Whatever your level you will find all the yoga positions, breathing techniques and relaxation practices will be hugely beneficial in keeping you as fit and healthy as possible and giving you the mental tools to approach birth in a positive and relaxed way.

The postures in pregnancy yoga are all designed to help pregnancy related aches and pains including backache, Sciatica, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (groin pain). They will help you develop flexibility, strength and stamina to support you during pregnancy and labour and you will learn useful techniques such as birth positioning, visualisation, breathing and relaxation to keep you as calm and in control as possible during the birth of your child.

Benefits of Pregnancy Yoga include:

  • Increase strength and flexibility of muscles needed for childbirth
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Improves sleep

“One of the reasons that yoga is so beneficial during pregnancy is that it gets us out of our heads and into our bodies which is a helpful state to be in when we are in labour. When we can switch off the thinking part of the brain we allow ourselves to be guided by the wisdom within us.”

Tara Lee (paraphrased from Pregnancy Health Yoga).
